2. if none can be found, how do i make one

I moved to Imboden , Arkansas . Home of the Bowie for pete's sake . Haven't found a place to buy coal here , but trainloads of it go past just down the hill from the house !

I have some mesquite, its good and clear, no checks, splits or knots... I was wondering what makes a attractive finish for this wood? I was thinking gunstock oil and paste wax, but does anyone have some ideas based on their experiences?

Hello everybody, I found my way here from paleo planet. I see some familiar names here.
Any who I just wanted to introduce myself. I am trying to teach myself knifemaking (with the help of the internet)

Hey guys,

Im working on a O1 knife and Im wondering why when I annealed it that it didnt really get softer... I took it to around 1800 then stuck it in a bucket of powdered refractory untill cold.... did I anneal it too cold? or does O1 just skate files off when its annealed?

Ok, I am really interested in making katanas and blade smithing. So, I have a lot of questions so please bare with me. Thank you for reading this monstrous questionnaire!

1. I was curious as what kind of clay ingredients they used for the hamon. Did they also use it for the body of the sword in the quenching process?

2. What is w-2?

3. How long do I put the steel in the fire before I take it out to be...

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around this forum for sometime while trying to gather up the stuff start forging, and figured it was time I introduce myself. I haven't tried to make a knife yet, but i did give a go at a fire poker the other day. Unfortunately the forge I hastily threw together (by hastily i mean about 10 minutes...) didn't get hot enough for my forge weld to stick, but it was a great first experience and i can't wait to start trying to make a blade!...

After gathering my stuff over the course of several months, I am finally firing up the forge (the airtank model from Lawren, relined with Kaowool and Satanite). Here are some shots of my set-up. My thanks to Lawren, John, Michael and all the others who have helped me get started. I look forward to sharing my works as they develop.

heat treating 101: the bake sale

If Life's a box of chocolates, then heat treating is baking cookies for a bake sale. There is a specific recipe to follow for best results.

Knowing what type of steel you are using is important... The chemistry of the steel will change the baking instructions just as much as changing from chocolate chip to gingerbread will in the cookies analogy.

The methodology is simple... Heat to the correct temperature, gench, heat again to temper,...

I recently found out that Brent has to have a couple surgeries, along with the accompanying meds, etc. He has no insurance, paid time off, or what have you, it's all coming out of his pocket. Is it my imagination or are there really only 3 or 4 people that use this portion of the forum board? I hadn`t looked in this area of the forum myself very often but I`m normally looking for newer posts & hadn`t noticed many posts lately. Is the practice of planning ahead for the long strange future ahead of us all of such a small consequence to the rest of the readers of the forum?

Mocotaugan / Crooked Knife Grind?

Good day all.

I'm currently in the process of making a mocotaugan and I'm a little confused on the angle of grind to go for. Anyone have any Ideas? I read on a guide on-line that said a 45* edge, but to me that just seems too steep.

Also, any tip on keeping the grind even across the blade?

On January 24th, I drove down to Tucson, AZ and spent a few hours with Mastersmith Tai Goo at his shop, and he taught me, helped me, and fixed my mistakes as we made this knife together. He showed me how to do things by starting to do them, then let me do what he showed me, and fixed my screw-ups while explaining how and why. It was a great experience and I really hope to go back soon! The knife is 8.5" overall, with a 4" blade. The handle is antler stained with shoe leather...
