I remember Tim Liveley in a Hoods Woods video showing his in ground forge. The part that I really like was that he seemed to be drawing a great draft with no blower at all. All I could tell was he started out with a 1' plus wide tubing and reduced it down over distance to fit to his twier. How does this work? Does anyone know the specs on this type of draft system? If could unplug my blower and get my charcoal/coke/coal hot enough to forge with, then thats what I want to do! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So now I guess i need to find a blower, I checked ebay....man folks sure are proud of them!

Posts: 1506 (12/15/08 7:55 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Alexander Weygers shows how to make an unpowered forge using a length of irrigation pipe and a paint can in "The Complete Modern Blacksmith". The pipe is hung off a tree branch to act as a chimney, the paint can has some holes punched in the bottom and a picee cut off the side to act as the door. Using charcoal for fuel, the draft of the chimney pulls air through the holes in the bottom of the can with the door acting to control how strong a draft goes through the fuel. It's a good book. For a quick set of bellows, you can take two buckets, slice two holes in the sides of each one, and put flap valves on them.Each bucket needs one in-valve (to suck air into the bellows), one out valve (to blow the air out). You might also want to put a few rocks in it at this point, to hold everything down. Then you put a bag (vinyl, canvas, leather, whatever, so long as it's airtight) over the lip of the buckets and use some rope or tape to tie them tightly together. Now, when you pull up the bag, air comes into the bellows, when you push down, it goes out. I'm still on the road to becoming totally unplugged. I still rely on my angle grinder to clean up really pitted steel, and my electric drill for pin holes. But I just inherited some tools that were my Grandpa's, a brace&bit, a eggbeater drill, some wood rasps, and little miniature vices that you can carry around in your pockets, and lots of other tools that are getting hard to find, it was like Christmas all over again! It was an idea that came from the Dakota Fire Hole. Bog Iron is right too. At the time I was heavy into Alexander Weygers book. The forge I used in the Hoods Woods video kept the fire burning without turning the blower. When I made the forge so deep it gave me great heats but it snuff itself out quickly so I needed the "venturi" thing to keep it lit. I probably used the word venturi incorrectly but I did form it with a wide mouth intake channeled down to a small outlet so maybe it was a venturi sort of. Whatever, it worked for what I needed. I use my portable washtub design these days but that ground forge gave me the best forge welding heats yet. BTW, I made my own video since then. http://www.livelyknives.com/knifemakingvideo.htm
