I've read that Tai, and some other have used pitch/rosin from Pinyon Pine, could this be applied to the Red Cedar? Not that many pines in my neck of the woods. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

When I lived in OH pinon pitch was not available but at a local park they had what must have been a "pitch pine" as anytime the trimmed it it would leak massive ammounts of pitch---filled a 12 oz cup to the top off of one visit to it. Posts: 12 (02/14/09 3:48 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Most pitch is fine, but you ought to heat it, strain it of bark/twigs/needles, and then boil it with the addition of some sort of aggregate... I use very fine charcoal powder, so the glue has some grit to it. Not too much, but not just straight pitch, either. It should end up black or very near black, and is great for sealing out moisture, filling hollow handles, and providing a good grip. Nature's "Hot Glue", if you will. It will get a little loose in extreme hot weather, so maybe not the best solution for the southwest or the middle east... but pretty good in most temperate climates. tidewaterforge.com Back to School: My Blog

I wish I had the money to go to Colorado this year, I always get enough spruce sap on me after a week of camping to glue a dozen handles on lol ! I've seen that Time Lively used deer dung with his, is the pulverized dung the best option? I was wondering if maybe some crushed pumice or slag would add extra strength? I don't know if I had metioned it or not, but I was planning on trying to use the latex from Osage Orange trees, I had cut one down last summer and the latex got all over my saw and the friction from cutting gummed it up and basically ruined my saw, couldn't get the stuff off for nothin. Just trying to get the most out of what nature offers!

Do i need to add more charcoal? Did i add too much charcoal? or is it probably just not a good species of pine for pitch collection?

I took me several days of adding different amounts of this and that to get mine where i wanted it.

I think I'll use that and some crushed up slag from making some orishigane, for the aggregate. I'm guessing the most critical part of getting good results from this adhesive, will be getting everythings set in place quickly before it starts cooling off , and let it cure up a good while before disturbing it. Anyone have any certain techniques for applying the resin to get the best results? Thanks for all the help!

Spruce pitch will work wonders and you don't have to tap the tree to get it. You can collect it from around any stem wounds or where branches have been trimmed

Occasionally you find some pine trees, or a spruce here or there, most of whats around here is post oak or red cedar. To find a good stand of pine trees I would need to raid the local golf course, or move a couple hundred miles to the SE to the Ozarks. And then again if I move a couple hundred miles to the SW theres plenty of magnetite ore. Ok now I'm getting distracted again, one thing at a time. lol!
