There's nothing wrong with a tanged arrowhead. Im making one tanged and one socketed myself. Do whatever you want. I was going to try and make some small
delicate thin ones but I wanted my name on them and the stamp I bought about a year ago was for bowie sized knives so I cant fit my name on an arrowhead. Mine
will probably be more spearhead size.

I was really intending to make a larger socketed head that would be more along the lines of a head for a large bolt or a small spearhead. I had a really good
session at the forge tonight so I might be getting closer to getting the socket right, its going to be close though.

Sorry, guys. I am afraid that I will have to remove myself from the list as well. To date, I have made zero progress toward completing the arrowhead/spear. Let
me get some work under my belt before I have to send something out to someone in exchange for their hard work.

When I was in the arrowhead KITH several years ago it took close to a dozen tries to get one that I was not ashamed of. A KITH is not a contest, it's a way
to encourage everyone to do thier best. As long as the person that receives the item knows that you did the best your skills could allow you to then there is
nothing that should stop you from contributing.
Nobody should ever have to apologize for doing their best. There are only two outcomes of a KITH participant. 1. You receive something from someone that is near your skill level and you realize that others are in the same boat as you. 2. You receive something from an accomplished maker and get to see up close how it was done. Either way you benefit. It's been five years since I have forged an arrowhead. So I can guarantee it will take a few tries for me to get one to turn out OK. |

I appreciate the encouragement, but I am still going to pull out of this one. I've got some technical difficulties to work out that are currently
preventing me from forging anything.

That stuff happens but there will be many more KITH's in the future. It's just a fun way for all of us to migrate out of our comfort zone and try new
stuff.

I took you off hawk. No problems. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe the next one will work out.
I started this arrowhead in the hat because I believe in and want to promote unplugged bladesmithing. Im not getting paid and I wont sell more knives or videos because of it. Im just trying to promote this style of knifemaking. Yes, Im trying to push yalls buttons and get you involved and maybe even get someone started into something they will persue for many years. Thats my motives here. I have a knack for rebel rousing and sometimes I get carried away so if I talked anyone into something they dont feel comfortable about then its my fault and theres no harm in bowing out. Bad hippie, bad!

A friend of mine brought me back a Scythian bronze arrowhead from a trip to Israel. It had a small hole in it and I had no idea why it was there. Then I
found out it was for a barb. This arrowhead could go back to 700 BC and it's amazing how well it has held up.
He also got me Roman knife and bronze ring. An intact Scythian arrowhead with the barb. This would be a cool challenge to reproduce from bronze.

Ah crap, I totally forgot about this thread! Sorry guys!
I am demonstrating this weekend as the Iron Age Blacksmith, so I will get the arrowhead done then (actually I did get most of the pictures done at the last event, but my camera died half way through ).
Tim, the bodkn points like you showed earlier are one of those great things for demos coz they change shape quickly and people recognize them straight off the hammer. They are also something that had to be turned out in their millions for battle, needle bodkins aren't hardened (they are traditionally wrought iron of course), though some of the stumpy plate piercing ones that come later are made of phosphoric iron to make them a bit harder. I was demonstrating arrowheads to a school party last year and they timed me making a needle bodkin about the same size as yours. Without the correct tools set up (ie no hardy mounted chisel, swage for turning the socket, etc) it took 1 1/2 minutes from glowing iron to shootable arrowhead! I reckon that if there were two or three smiths working together with the right set up it would be possible to average one a minute or more
Whatever I turn out for this head in the hat, I'll throw in a bodkin with it
Tim, sorry I didn't realise that you had done a tutorial for socketed heads, I remembered the double curled tanged one and thought you meant that Your technique is different to mine, but there are many ways to skin a
cat . I'll do a tutorial of my way as well, just so folk can see another way of approaching the same task.

Yeah, a tutorial would be great! No one showed me how to make them so I was just guessing. It sounds like you can really pump them out. |

well, on account of my being the most disorganised person on the planet, I left my freshly made arowhead tongs at home last weekend, so couldn't make an
arrowhead then
I'm lighting up tomorrow in the workshop and I'll do a head for a tutorial then. The head(s) for the aith will have to wait a couple of weeks until I'm next teaching/demonstrating with my old forges if I'm keeping it unplugged (my workshop has power, though it is solar powered if that helps ).
the minute and a half was a very simple bodkin that does not need to be pretty or accurate, it's a disposable item needed in the millions. Also I couldn keep that rate up all day! I think it's probably very much on a par with nail making time wise, so think nail making factories for the volume of heads really made (maybe a couple or so every 5 minutes?). Mostly the only tools aside from hammer and pointy socket tongs are a hardy cutter and a V or half round swage to start the socket. If I'm making a posh socket I probably should use a mandrel to clean it up, but I've not got around to making one yet and rely on it being 'close enough for jazz'
Don't just tickle it!

How should I do the drawing? Should we have someone outside the hat to do the drawing of the names? Any suggestions?
