Lets make a Fish tail
























Ok.. so now the pocket is formed... lets fish tail out the socket... use a narrow face double jack... as well as a cross pien to flare out the end of the tail... the nicer the triangle you make... the easier it will roll up..

oh ya... remember to round up the backside of the socket on the tip of the horn... you don't want those square corners to show up on the waist of the socket

Let Roll
-- now you fishtail is made nice... the sides are some what even... start to roll it on the fat part of the horn...
-- your starting strikes are at the beginning of the split... narrow it down there first as you turn it.... keep turning as you strike it... to keep it even

now finish up the rest with a flat face german hammer over the flat of the anvil

now straighten it and draw out with german flat face hammer 4lb









now lets work the diamond
-this is hard stuff.. so don't get stressed..
- the day before i made this little dog face hammer just for this..
-now keep in mind you have to hold it at an angle... and forge the top bevel in on an angle...
- constantly flip from one side to the other...
- work it on the edge of the anvil
and good luck








not bad... ridgeline looks somewhat straight

now lets fix up the socket.... and straighten it on the bick
- make sure you rotate the socket while doing this...
- sight down it ... make sure it looks straight
















My vacation ran out... so i didn't get time to show how to rivet the T-bar in the bottom of the socket... but i bet you can figure that one out..

ps.. there also alot of stock reduction to be done... and sometimes the socket needs a little tweaking after its finished before heat treat... just to line it up with the pole

one correction... .. its a railroad anchor..

it seemed to me that the spear is really under rated... ..such an old tool, feels good to make one !

sockets are cool

if you make sure the edges of the fish tail are very straight... it'll line up better ... but the one example i seen in the maritime museum (over here) of a viking spear.... didn't have the socket welded shut... -- also, i didn't feel like sitting there with a file to true it up...

hopefully i'll continue later with the heat treat.... i put the spear on a bus... so it should be here in a couple days... didn't want to fly with it for obvious reasons...
