Here's a quick rundown on makeing a handle or spacer to spice up a blade. Its easy but takes some time and patience to get a good pattern.
First select the materials for the handle, you want something that will contrast nicely. In this case I used osage orange and purple heart.

I usually use whatever scraps I have left from other projects.
Now stack the strips in whatever order you wish. This choice will impact the outcome of the handle.

Glue the strips and clamp to dry. Use a good quality waterproof glue. It's no fun to see your work desintrgrate when it gets damp.

Now cut thin wafers from the stack on an angle. I use a bandsaw but have used a miter saw or hacksaw in the past.
Cut on an angle to the original stack.

Flip, rotate and line up the cut wafers to get the design you like best. Glue them together and clamp. Besure to line up both sides of the pattern so it will match on both sides of the handle.

The thinner you cut the pieces to start with, the more pattern will result in the finished piece.
Have fun trying it, it's simple, easy but like I said... it takes some time (mostly waiting for the glue to dry
