how do i adjust the amount of heat on a forge? |

hello,
i was just wonderring if you guys have a knob or something on your forge because i never could understand how to adjust the heat or find out the temperature of the metal. mini musashi |

Many of us use a forge with a hand crank blower, and all you do is crank less or more rapidly to adjust airflow. On electric forges, there's either a fan controller rheostat or a vent system. I don't know how it's done with a gas forge.
Heat is a matter of looking at the color of the steel. Here's a chart I found on the internet to give you some more precise info...  Spike Spike

thats a good chart
i was wondering u can get iron up to dazziling white and still be a solid but pictures iv seen of molten iron always looks yellow or orange anwers anyone? i thought it might be somthing to do with the camera and if seen by ur eyes it'll look different but i really don't know |

You look at anything in a forge that's above blood red (1050 F) mark with out eye protection for very long, you can do irreperable damage to your eyes!
Read and study up before you no longer can. You get up into the "brights" it only takes doses in seconds to begin the damage. You only get one set so
take care of them. Never, never, never stare in the forge! Glasses or not.

Real wrought iron welds at a "snowball" heat that mild steel is destroyed at. Ambiant light makes a big difference when looking at temperature
colours too. Sunlight will wash out most temps!
Note---ignore that time of heating and soak chart; probably for furnaces not forges. Most my forges will burn a piece in two with those times. Thomas |
